Events

Corona ladies attending a Garden Party at Buckingham Palace.

Corona Worldwide Members have access to all their branch events, London Events and other branches’ events if they are in the area. They are also welcome to attend events hosted by the Joint Commonwealth Organisations (JCO), The Federation of International Women’s Associations in London (FIWAL) and other affiliated organisations.

London Events

London Events have been organised for the members of Corona who may be in town from the branches or are members of London Jubilee. Over many years we have visited Galleries, Museums or the homes of famous residents. Sometimes we have walked the streets and enjoyed their history, or looked down on them from roof gardens. We usually meet monthly throughout the year.

Tuesday 16th June, at 11.30
Biscuit Town, The Peek Freans Museum

From Beormund’s eye or island in the swampy fringes of the Thames with a mediaeval Priory, to a pleasure garden, Bermondsey Spa Gardens, in the 1760’s, a miniature Vauxhall. In the Industrial era it supported leather tanneries, now remembered in Tanner, Morrocco and Leather Market Street. The expression “Mad as a Hatter” Christy’s of Bermondsey was the largest hat factory in the world, and the chemicals toxic to the workers using them.

The area also had a sweeter side, with Pinks, Shuttleworth’s, Hartley’s, Lipton’s jams and marmalades, the Bolanachi Chocolate Co; the area smelled of chocolate. We are visiting the Peek Frean Museum, a reminder of this past.

The small museum was created by Frank and Gary, who were determined to retain something of the cultural heritage of this part of London. In part of the original factory (now Workspace) they created this collection and Frank will be there to tell us about the company which produced 2 billion biscuits in the 1930’s, and supported its own fire brigade, and in which he worked.

We will be greeted with tea and biscuits!

Please contact Emmie Pollard on londonevents@coronaworldwide.org to join in any of these events. Further details on these events are available to Corona members in the Members area.

JCO Events

Joint Commonwealth Organisations (JCO)

Once again the JCO held a very successful annual event. Last year members from across the five organisations came together to visit the Royal Courts of Justice and Middle Temple Great Hall.

They are always looking for interesting places to visit and opportunities for members to network, share knowledge and enjoy each other’s company.
